Biomass Immobilization
Agrobics applies biomass immobilization as the major technique for improving operational characteristics of anaerobic treatment of high load effluents.
The advantages of the immobilization of biomass are:
- High biomass concentrations at the initial time of reactor operation
- Biomass reuse without recycling
- Elimination of biomass wash-out
Immobilized biomass tolerates higher organic loading rates (higher than 15 gBOD/l/d) and decreases the required volume of bioreactor and retention time. Immobilization of cells with a high concentration of biomass significantly reduces the start-up period of the bioreactor.
Entrapping bacteria protects them from predation, water, and nutrient stress, and it allows for a larger bacterial population over a longer time interval.
