Biomass Immobilization

immobilizer shapes smallAgrobics applies biomass immobilization as the major technique for improving operational characteristics of anaerobic treatment of high load effluents.

The advantages of the immobilization of biomass are:

  • High biomass concentrations at the initial time of reactor operation
  • Biomass reuse without recycling
  • Elimination of biomass wash-out

Immobilized biomass tolerates higher organic loading rates (higher than 15 gBOD/l/d) and decreases the required volume of bioreactor and retention time. Immobilization of cells with a high concentration of biomass significantly reduces the start-up period of the bioreactor.

Entrapping bacteria protects them from predation, water, and nutrient stress, and it allows for a larger bacterial population over a longer time interval.
